We coach FIRST® LEGO® League Explore!
What is FIRST LEGO League Explore?

FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is an event that takes place all over the world annually to introduce children to science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) through fun, exciting hands-on learning using LEGO kits. In the UK, FLL is run by the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET).
Participants gain real-world problem solving experience through a guided, global robotics program. During the program, children are encouraged to experiment and grow their critical thinking, coding, and design skills through hands-on STEM learning and robotics.
We currently coach on First LEGO League Explore, a non-competitive hands-on STEM programme for 6 to 9 year olds, which encourages children to investigate a real-world theme, develop teamwork, design and programming skills – and have fun.
Teams of up to 6 students focus on the fundamentals of engineering as they explore real-world problems, learn to design, and code, and create unique solutions made with LEGO bricks and powered by LEGO® Education WeDo 2.0.
Once they’ve created their model and programmed it, the teams present their work at an FLL Festival where they get to see the creations of other teams from around the country and get lots of praise and reward!
What do students need to produce for FIRST LEGO League Festival?
Children work in teams of up to 6 to produce the following for their presentation at the FIRST LEGO League Festival :
- Team model
- Moving Element using the Lego WeDo
- Team “Show me” poster
The FLL Explore festival is non-competitive. On the day, you’ll meet a group of reviewers. This is your opportunity to communicate your ideas, share your learning and show off your brilliant programming.
This day is all about the students and showing off everything that they’re learnt. At the end of the day, all attendees get a LEGO FLL Medal and certificate to take home.

What does a coach do?

Team coaches are a huge part of what makes FIRST® LEGO® League Explore possible. As well as running the team sessions and accompanying the team to the Festival, we look to uphold the FIRST Core values of :
- Discovery
- Innovation
- Impact
- Inclusion
- Teamwork
- Fun
You do not need any specific experience to be a team coach – just a passion for inspiring children and the ambition to develop their STEM, coding and communication skills!
Luckily, I have those things in spades, as well as the experience and the all the necessary LEGO kit to boot!
